An important part of the Festival of the Bluegrass is encouraging younger generations to carry on the musical tradition. The Cornett family has supported a non-profit Bluegrass Music Camp for this purpose - kids ages 6-18 come and learn the craft from experienced musicians.
Beginners: Should have some experience with an instrument.
Intermediate: Should at least be able to strum and change basic chords in time and play simple melodies. They should be comfortable with slow jamming.
Advanced: Participants are expected to play well with others, be competent at faster rhythms and complex lead parts, and cover material quickly
Kids must provide their own instruments. If that is a problem, let us know and we’ll see if we can find one for you.
The camp will provide lunch on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Breakfast and supper are not provided by the camp.
The classrooms are outdoors, under shade tents and trees, so prepare the campers accordingly. They should also bring picks, rosin, extra strings, and an armless folding chair.
For campers spending the night, bring camping and shower gear, a cooler for food and drinks, rain gear (just in case), bug spray, and a swimming suit and towel for use at the pool during free time.
